Jaipur: In a shocking case of betrayal and elaborate planning, Jaipur Police have uncovered a theft involving nearly ₹50 lakh allegedly stolen from a retired doctor’s residence by a long-time domestic helper.
The accused, identified as Sumit, had been working at the household for nearly a decade, officials said. Police allege that the stolen cash was secretly stored in spice containers inside the kitchen, kept there by the family for their grandchild’s education savings.
According to investigators, the accused discovered the hidden money after gaining knowledge of the storage location through access to CCTV monitoring. He allegedly devised a detailed plan to carry out the theft over an extended period.
Alleged Premeditated Plan
Police said the accused first targeted the family’s pet dog, which was reportedly poisoned in March after raising suspicion among household members. The incident initially went unexplained but is now believed to have been part of the larger plan to eliminate obstacles during the theft.
Investigators further revealed that the accused studied the CCTV system in the house under the pretext of repairing it. He later allegedly disabled the kitchen camera to avoid recording during the crime and involved another domestic worker in the process.
To avoid detection, the accused is believed to have withdrawn small amounts of cash over time rather than taking the entire sum at once. He also allegedly staged a break-in by having his minor son break a window to mislead investigators into believing an external burglary had occurred.
Suspicion and Arrest
The family reportedly grew suspicious after noticing sudden changes in the accused’s lifestyle, including increased spending on luxury items, hotels, and parties. Based on a complaint, police detained and interrogated the accused, during which he allegedly confessed to the crime.
Authorities have so far recovered ₹33 lakh from his possession, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining amount.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are also examining the role of the other domestic worker allegedly involved in the incident. Officials stated that the accused executed the crime with considerable planning, but inconsistencies in behaviour and financial activity ultimately led to his arrest.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajarshi Raj confirmed that further investigation is in progress and efforts are being made to recover the remaining stolen funds.
