LPG Supply Disruptions Surface Across India Amid Global Tensions; Enforcement Actions Intensify

India is witnessing growing disruptions in the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with reports of shortages, delayed deliveries, and rising black-market activity emerging from multiple states. The situation is being linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have impacted global energy supply chains.

While authorities maintain that LPG supplies remain stable, ground reports indicate otherwise, with consumers across several regions facing delays in cylinder deliveries despite confirmed bookings. In many areas, long queues have formed outside gas agencies, and protests have been reported as public frustration mounts.

Maharashtra: Major LPG Theft Racket Busted

In Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department uncovered a large-scale LPG theft and black-marketing operation. Acting on intelligence inputs, a vigilance team conducted a raid near Vaijapur Road in the Gangapur taluka area.

During the operation, two individuals were caught siphoning LPG from tankers after breaking their seals. Authorities seized two tankers belonging to HP Gas, carrying a combined total of over 35,000 kilograms of LPG. Additionally, 26 cylinders of varying capacities were recovered.

Officials estimated the total value of the seized material at approximately ₹1.26 crore, sufficient to meet the needs of nearly 2,480 households. A case has been registered at the MIDC Waluj police station, and investigations are underway to identify other members of the network.

Punjab: Protests Erupt Over Supply Shortages

In Punjab’s Faridkot district, residents staged protests for the second consecutive day over the non-availability of domestic LPG cylinders. Demonstrators blocked key roads, alleging mismanagement and lack of transparency in distribution.

Despite assurances from local authorities that supplies would be streamlined, consumers reported that no cylinders were distributed even after hours of waiting. Police later intervened to disperse the crowd and restore traffic movement.

Uttar Pradesh: Black Marketing and Overpricing Exposed

In Lucknow, authorities uncovered instances of black marketing, where small LPG cylinders (4 litres) were reportedly being sold at inflated prices ranging from ₹1,200 to ₹1,400—significantly higher than the usual rate of around ₹400.

Hidden camera investigations revealed traders openly engaging in such practices. In response, enforcement agencies have stepped up action, conducting over 17,500 raids, registering 222 FIRs, and making multiple arrests.

In a separate case from Gorakhpur, a gas agency operator was arrested for allegedly forcing customers to purchase gas pipes under the pretext of mandatory KYC compliance.

Delhi: Illegal Refilling Network Dismantled

In the national capital, Delhi Police busted an illegal LPG refilling racket in the Palam village area. Acting on a tip-off, police raided a site where domestic cylinders were being unlawfully refilled without safety measures.

Three individuals were arrested, and authorities seized 45 cylinders, gas transfer nozzles, a weighing machine, and a transport vehicle. Preliminary investigations suggest links to employees associated with a local gas service provider. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Essential Commodities Act.

Growing Concerns Over Supply Chain Integrity

The developments highlight increasing concerns over the integrity of LPG supply chains amid global uncertainties. Experts warn that disruptions, coupled with local-level malpractice such as hoarding and black marketing, could further strain access to essential household fuel.

Authorities across states have intensified enforcement efforts, but the situation underscores the need for stronger monitoring mechanisms to ensure timely supply and prevent exploitation of consumers during periods of crisis.
