The Delhi Police Crime Branch has uncovered a major racket involving the sale of expired food products and beverages with tampered manufacturing and expiry dates, posing a serious threat to public health.
The operation was exposed during a raid conducted in th
e Bamnoli village area of Dwarka, where officials apprehended three individuals involved in repackaging and distributing expired goods in the market.
Modus Operandi
According to investigators, the accused procured expired or near-expiry products from the market at heavily discounted rates. These items—including biscuits, packaged food products, and soft drinks—were then altered to appear fresh.
The suspects allegedly used chemical substances such as thinner to erase original manufacturing and expiry dates from the packaging. Subsequently, they reprinted falsified dates using specialised coding and printing machines, making the products appear newly manufactured before reintroducing them into the market.
Seizures and Evidence
During the raid, the Crime Branch recovered a large quantity of expired goods, including cartons of soft drinks and packaged biscuits. Among the seized items were products from several well-known beverage brands, including Thums Up, Sprite, Limca, and Coca-Cola.
Officials also recovered the machinery used to print fake dates, along with packaging materials used to reseal the products.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Three individuals, including the alleged mastermind of the operation, have been arrested in connection with the case. During interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted to their involvement in the illegal activities.
Authorities are now working to trace the full extent of the distribution network and identify wholesale channels through which the altered products were supplied to the market.
The incident highlights serious concerns regarding food safety and underscores the need for stricter monitoring of supply chains to prevent such fraudulent practices.
