Tensions appear to have surfaced within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after senior leader Saurabh Bharadwaj publicly criticised Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, urging him to adopt a more assertive stance against the BJP-led central government.
The remarks came in response to Chadha’s recent video message, in which he questioned his removal as the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha and defended his record of raising public-interest issues in Parliament.
Internal Rift Surfaces After Leadership Change
The development follows AAP’s decision to replace Chadha with Ashok Mittal as deputy leader in the Upper House, a move that has triggered speculation about internal differences within the party. While Chadha initially remained silent, he later released a video asking whether it was a “crime” to highlight issues affecting ordinary citizens.
‘Raise Bigger Issues, Not Soft PR’
Responding to the video, Bharadwaj called on Chadha to prioritise substantive national and state issues over what he described as “soft PR” topics.
In a strongly worded message, he emphasised that AAP leaders are expected to challenge the government fearlessly. He argued that limited speaking time in Parliament should be utilised to raise pressing concerns rather than comparatively trivial matters.
Bharadwaj also alleged that the current political environment discourages dissent, claiming that those who question the government face legal and institutional pressures. He stressed that symbolic or non-confrontational interventions would have little impact in such a climate.
Questions Over Political Positioning
The AAP leader further criticised Chadha for what he described as a lack of participation in key opposition actions, including parliamentary walkouts and efforts to challenge government decisions. He also questioned why Chadha had not more forcefully raised issues concerning Punjab, the state he represents in the Rajya Sabha.
Bharadwaj cited instances where party workers and leaders allegedly faced legal action, arguing that stronger solidarity and vocal opposition were required during such periods.
Party Voices Echo Criticism
Echoing similar sentiments, AAP’s national media in-charge Anurag Dhanda accused Chadha of hesitating to directly confront Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP in Parliament.
Dhanda argued that AAP’s political identity is rooted in fearlessness and that parliamentary interventions should reflect that ethos by focusing on major national issues rather than less consequential matters.
Chadha Defends His Record
In his earlier statement, Chadha maintained that he has consistently raised issues affecting the public, including concerns related to rising costs, gig workers, and middle-class taxation. He questioned why such interventions should be viewed negatively and asserted that his silence should not be interpreted as defeat.
A Party at a Crossroads
The exchange highlights emerging differences within AAP over political strategy and parliamentary conduct. As the party navigates internal dynamics and external political pressures, the episode underscores a broader debate on how opposition parties should balance issue-based advocacy with direct political confrontation.
