BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi After General Naravane Refutes Claims of Territorial Loss to China

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a sharp attack on Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, following remarks by former Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane dismissing claims of territorial loss to China.

The controversy stems from statements made by Rahul Gandhi during the Budget Session of Parliament in February, where he attempted to cite excerpts from General Naravane’s yet-to-be-published memoir, Four Stars of Destiny. The Speaker disallowed the reference, noting that the book had not been officially published at the time.

Responding to the issue, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that the Congress leader had created confusion regarding India’s territorial integrity. He asserted that General Naravane had made it clear that “not even an inch of land was ceded to China,” and emphasised that the armed forces had full political backing during the 2020 standoff.

In an interview with CNN-News18, General Naravane addressed the controversy, stating that it was “totally unfair” to involve him and the armed forces in political discourse through the use of unpublished material. Addressing concerns over the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), he remarked that questions regarding territorial gains should be directed to China, implying that no such gains had occurred on the Indian side.

Background to the Dispute

The issue first gained traction in February when excerpts from the unpublished memoir surfaced in political discussions. Rahul Gandhi cited portions of the text to claim that the former Army Chief had alerted Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other officials about Chinese troop movements, including tanks advancing towards strategic positions.

The reference relates to developments on August 31, 2020, when Chinese forces reportedly moved towards Rechin La in Ladakh during heightened border tensions. Gandhi alleged that the government’s response to these developments was delayed.

The memoir, originally slated for release in 2024 by Penguin Random House India, remains pending approval from the Ministry of Defence, thereby continuing to fuel political debate.

The episode has since evolved into a broader political confrontation, underscoring the sensitivity surrounding national security issues and their intersection with public and parliamentary discourse.
