Marco Jansen has expressed strong appreciation for the leadership style of Shreyas Iyer at Punjab Kings, describing the team environment as collaborative and empowering rather than rigid or authoritarian.
Speaking during a media interaction on Thursday, the 25-year-old South African pacer highlighted Iyer’s clarity, motivation, and openness as key attributes that set him apart as a captain in the Indian Premier League.
Jansen noted that Iyer provides players with the freedom to express themselves on the field while maintaining a clear sense of direction and purpose. He emphasised that the captain fosters a positive environment where players feel valued and are encouraged to contribute ideas, rather than being confined to a top-down approach.
Describing Iyer as “goal-driven” and “headstrong,” Jansen said the captain’s intent and planning are evident during team meetings and training sessions. He added that Iyer’s willingness to engage in discussions and work collaboratively with players helps build confidence within the squad.
Adaptability Within the Bowling Unit
In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Jansen has claimed five wickets in six matches, often operating as a first-change bowler behind Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett, and occasionally alongside Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Despite being more accustomed to bowling with the new ball, Jansen said he has adapted comfortably to different phases of the innings. He acknowledged that while early overs offer the advantage of swing, he remains confident in his ability to contribute effectively regardless of when he is introduced into the attack.
He also credited his fellow pacers for their consistency with the new ball, noting that their ability to generate swing allows him to approach his role with greater flexibility and confidence.
Focus on Conditions and Execution
On the technical aspects of his bowling, Jansen stressed the importance of adapting to match conditions rather than adhering to rigid strategies. He pointed out that assessing conditions quickly and executing basic processes effectively are key to success on any given day.
Referencing the consistency of Josh Hazlewood, Jansen underscored the value of discipline and clarity in execution, particularly in high-pressure situations such as the death overs.
Overall, Jansen’s remarks reflect a cohesive and trust-driven team culture at Punjab Kings, where roles are fluid, communication is encouraged, and leadership is built on mutual respect and shared objectives.
