CSK Suffer Blow as Ayush Mhatre Likely to Miss IPL 2026 Matches with Hamstring Tear

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been dealt a significant setback in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, with young batter Ayush Mhatre sustaining a hamstring tear during their narrow 10-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The injury was confirmed by CSK batting coach Michael Hussey, who indicated that the early signs suggest a potentially serious setback for the in-form No. 3 batter.

Injury Halts Promising Knock

Mhatre, who scored a quickfire 20 off 13 balls, once again provided much-needed momentum at the top of the order—an area where CSK have struggled this season.

However, his innings was cut short while attempting a second run alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The youngster suddenly pulled up, clutching his left hamstring, and required immediate medical attention on the field.

Although he briefly attempted to continue, his mobility was visibly restricted. He was eventually dismissed after being caught by Heinrich Klaasen off the bowling of Nitish Kumar Reddy.

On his way back to the pavilion, Mhatre had to be assisted off the field by support staff, unable to walk unaided.

‘Looks Pretty Bad’: Hussey

Speaking after the match, Michael Hussey acknowledged the severity of the injury.

“Obviously it is a hamstring tear. We don’t yet know how bad it is. He will undergo scans in the next day or two, but it looks quite serious,” Hussey said.

He added that Mhatre’s absence would be a considerable loss, given his recent form and impact at the top of the order. However, he also noted that the situation could open the door for other squad members.

“As disappointing as it is to lose Ayush, it presents an opportunity for someone else. We have players who haven’t yet had their chance, and this could be an exciting moment for them,” he said.

CSK Face Selection Challenge Ahead of Key Fixture

The injury compounds CSK’s growing fitness concerns this season and raises the possibility that Mhatre could miss a significant portion of the tournament.

With a four-day gap before their next match against Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, the team will be closely monitoring his recovery and awaiting scan results.

Among the potential replacements, Urvil Patel has emerged as a strong contender, having previously impressed in the middle order.

Outlook

As CSK navigate a challenging phase in their IPL campaign, the loss of a promising young batter adds further pressure on team balance and performance. The coming days will be crucial in determining both the extent of Mhatre’s injury and the team’s strategy moving forward.
