MELBOURNE — Independent Australian MP Helen Haines is showing signs of improvement after suffering serious injuries in a vehicle incident near her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Reports on Saturday, October 24, said the 65-year-old politician had moved out of immediate danger, although her condition remained serious but stable.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 19. Haines was taken to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne for emergency treatment. Despite efforts to save her life, the severity of her injuries meant that both her legs had to be amputated. She remained in a critical condition for several days before her health reportedly began to improve.
Police arrested 43-year-old Brendan Nugent in connection with the incident. He faces charges including causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and assaulting a Commonwealth public official. He has also been charged with offences related to cannabis cultivation and possession. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.
Messages of support have poured in from across Australia, with members of the public gathering for candlelight vigils and prayers. Donations to Save the Children, a charity supporting children's welfare, have also increased significantly following an appeal by Haines's husband, Phil Haines. Reports on October 24 said the donations had exceeded one million Australian dollars.
Haines represents the electorate of Indi in north-east Victoria and serves as an independent member of the Australian Parliament. The incident has prompted widespread concern across the country's political community.
