Daniel Kinahan Arrested in UAE Following International Operation

Ireland/Dubai: Daniel Kinahan, the alleged head of the Kinahan organised crime group, has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates following a coordinated international law enforcement operation involving Dubai Police and An Garda Síochána.

The 48-year-old, who has been based in the UAE for more than a decade, was placed under surveillance in recent days before being apprehended at his residence. The arrest followed the issuance of a warrant by Irish courts on April 15, after the Director of Public Prosecutions approved charges alleging that Kinahan directed a criminal organisation.

Authorities confirmed that Kinahan is currently being held in Dubai pending extradition proceedings. Under UAE law, he is entitled to challenge the extradition request, a process that could take several months. However, officials indicated that the timeline may be expedited under a recently finalised bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.

If extradited and convicted, Kinahan could face a sentence of life imprisonment. Irish authorities are expected to mount a significant security operation for his transfer, similar to previous high-profile extraditions involving figures such as Gerry Hutch and Sean McGovern.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána confirmed the arrest of an Irish national in his late 40s in connection with serious organised crime offences, describing it as a major demonstration of international cooperation in tackling transnational criminal networks. Dubai Police similarly stated that the arrest was carried out in coordination with the UAE Ministry of Interior after receiving a judicial file from Irish authorities detailing the suspect’s alleged involvement in a global crime syndicate.

Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, welcomed the development, noting that the arrest followed a formal request for extradition. He highlighted the strengthening of legal and policing cooperation between Ireland and the UAE, including recent agreements on extradition and mutual legal assistance.

Kinahan has long been linked to the violent Kinahan–Hutch feud, a protracted gang conflict that resulted in multiple fatalities and drew significant international attention. The dispute, rooted in rivalries within Ireland’s organised crime landscape, escalated sharply following a series of retaliatory attacks beginning in 2015.

The Kinahan network has also been the subject of international sanctions, including measures imposed by the United States in 2022 targeting its leadership and financial operations. While the group’s activities in Ireland have reportedly diminished in recent years, it remains a priority target for law enforcement agencies in multiple jurisdictions.
