Dublin Physiotherapist Faces Misconduct Inquiry Over Patient Allegations

A Dublin-based physiotherapist is facing allegations of professional misconduct following claims of inappropriate behaviour towards a patient during a treatment session. The case is currently under review by a fitness-to-practise inquiry conducted by CORU, Ireland’s regulatory body for health and social care professionals.

The practitioner, whose identity has been withheld on the direction of the committee, has strongly denied the allegations, which include claims of both professional misconduct and poor professional performance. He has rejected assertions that he made sexually suggestive remarks to the patient or engaged in any form of unjustified physical contact.

According to evidence presented at the inquiry, the complainant—referred to as Ms A—had been receiving treatment from the physiotherapist since September 2022 for an ankle injury, followed by ongoing instability issues. She attended a total of nine sessions prior to the incident in question.

Ms A testified that she felt apprehensive about attending her appointment on February 7, 2023, citing concerns stemming from what she perceived as inappropriate physical contact during a previous session in January. She further alleged that during the February consultation, the physiotherapist made comments of a sexual nature and referred to her in a manner she found deeply uncomfortable and unprofessional.

The inquiry is continuing as the committee examines the evidence and submissions from both parties before reaching a determination.
