BJP Chief Nitin Nabin Targets Opposition, Links Criticism of PM Modi to Women’s Representation Debate

New Delhi: Nitin Nabin on Thursday launched a pointed political attack on Opposition parties, asserting that their criticism of Narendra Modi is increasingly being perceived as opposition to women—referred to as “aadhi aabadi,” or half the population.

In a conversation with Rahul Joshi, Managing Director and Group Editor-in-Chief of Network18, Nabin argued that the political contest has moved beyond conventional party lines. He suggested that women, who form a significant share of the electorate, are directly affected by the Opposition’s stance on key legislative measures.

Consultative Approach to Women’s Reservation Bill

Highlighting the government’s approach to the Women’s Reservation Bill, Nabin emphasised that the legislation was preceded by extensive consultations with multiple political stakeholders. He noted that the Centre made efforts to build consensus before advancing the proposal.

Citing remarks made by the Prime Minister in Parliament, Nabin said that Modi had publicly expressed willingness to share credit with Opposition parties for the bill, describing it as a collective national effort rather than a partisan initiative.

Positioning the legislation as a landmark reform, Nabin reiterated that women’s reservation remains a core political commitment, even as differences among parties continue to delay its full implementation.

Delimitation Debate and Political Positioning

Addressing concerns over delimitation, Nabin pointed out that the legal framework governing the process was established during periods when Opposition parties were in power. He argued that current criticism lacks consistency, given that the foundational legislation was enacted earlier.

He further accused Opposition leaders of politicising the issue by framing it along regional lines, particularly by invoking a north-south divide. According to Nabin, such narratives risk creating unnecessary tensions around representation and federal balance.

Women as a Central Electoral Focus

Nabin’s remarks also reflect a broader political strategy of placing women at the centre of electoral discourse. As debates over representation, delimitation, and legislative priorities continue, the BJP appears to be positioning women as a key constituency in its outreach efforts.
