Mahabubabad: What began as a joyful family gathering during a local festival ended in tragedy in Pilligundla Thanda village in Telangana’s Mahabubabad district, where a man died after choking on food during a meal.
The deceased, identified as Banoth Bichcha, a farmer from Gudur mandal, had hosted relatives at his home to mark the Durgamma festival—an occasion traditionally celebrated with communal feasts and family gatherings. The atmosphere, described by locals as lively and festive, took a sudden and devastating turn during the meal.
Sudden Medical Emergency
According to accounts, Bichcha was eating mutton with rice when a piece of meat became lodged in his throat. He was unable to either swallow or expel it, and soon began to show signs of severe distress. Family members and guests attempted to assist him, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Within minutes, he lost consciousness and was rushed to the Gudur Community Health Centre. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Family and Community in Shock
The sudden loss has left the family and the local community in deep shock. Bichcha, who was the primary breadwinner, is survived by his wife and children. Relatives who had gathered for the celebration found themselves mourning an unexpected loss instead.
Villagers soon assembled at the residence, offering condolences and support to the grieving family.
Police Inquiry Initiated
Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s son, local police have registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the exact circumstances of the incident. Officials stated that standard procedures are being followed.
Health Advisory
Medical professionals note that such incidents serve as a critical reminder of the risks associated with choking, particularly when eating quickly or talking while consuming food. They advise caution during meals, especially when consuming meat, to prevent similar tragedies.
The incident underscores how a moment of routine activity can turn fatal, leaving a lasting impact on families and communities.
