Fresh Violence Erupts in Noida as Labour Protests Intensify Across Sectors

Fresh violence erupted in Noida on Tuesday, as unrest linked to ongoing labour protests intensified across multiple sectors. Incidents of stone pelting were reported in Sector 80, where police said they managed to partially restore calm, while tensions persisted in Sector 70, with repeated attacks on security personnel. Authorities confirmed that efforts were underway to bring the situation under control.

The unrest also spread to residential areas, with police vehicles targeted in Cleo County. Amid the escalating chaos, schoolchildren in the vicinity reportedly sought shelter in nearby hotels as a precautionary measure. Security forces have since been deployed extensively across the city to contain the situation.

According to Sub-Inspector Mata Prasad Gupta, the violence was triggered during a protest by domestic workers. “Some miscreants resorted to stone pelting while a group of house-help workers were staging a sit-in over their demands. We intervened, but certain elements turned violent, leading to injuries, including mine. Several individuals have been detained and will be questioned,” he said.

The latest flare-up follows widespread violence on Monday, when a protest over wages escalated into large-scale unrest involving more than 40,000 factory workers across over 80 locations in Noida. Major roads were blocked, severely disrupting traffic, while security was tightened citywide. The situation deteriorated further in Phase-2 and Sector 63, where incidents of arson and vandalism were reported, with multiple vehicles set ablaze and both public and private property damaged.

Law enforcement agencies resorted to tear gas and deployed substantial forces to disperse crowds and restore order. So far, approximately 300 individuals have been arrested on charges of arson and vandalism, while over 100 others have been detained for questioning. Officials indicated that CCTV footage is being analysed to identify additional suspects.

In response to the unrest, the Government of Uttar Pradesh announced a wage hike for workers on Monday. However, protests intensified on Tuesday, with domestic workers, including maids employed in residential societies, joining the agitation in large numbers at Cleo County. Protesters cited rising living costs, inadequate wages, lack of leave, and excessive workloads, warning that they would not resume work until their demands are addressed.

Meanwhile, similar labour unrest was reported in Bhiwadi, where hundreds of employees gathered outside Motherson India Private Limited in the Pathredi industrial area of the Khairthal-Tijara district. An estimated 1,000 to 2,000 workers staged a mass protest, raising slogans and demanding fair wage revisions, improved working conditions, and action against alleged misconduct by senior officials. Workers also alleged harassment and threats of termination by the management.

The company, which employs over 8,000 personnel, remains under close watch by authorities as tensions continue to simmer in the region.
