India Halted Operation Sindoor on Its Own Terms, Ready for ‘Long War’: Rajnath Singh

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday asserted that India had voluntarily paused Operation Sindoor on its own terms, while remaining fully prepared for a prolonged conflict if required. He made these remarks at the ANI National Security Summit 2.0, where he outlined India’s evolving security posture and its approach to combating terrorism.

Singh emphasised that the decision to halt the operation was not due to any limitation in capability. “We precisely targeted those responsible for the attack. The operation was stopped voluntarily, and we were prepared for a long war if necessary,” he said, underscoring the readiness and resilience of the Indian armed forces.

‘Turning Point’ in India’s Security Doctrine

Describing Operation Sindoor as a “turning point,” Singh said the mission demonstrated a shift in India’s response to terrorism. He noted that India no longer relies solely on diplomatic responses in the face of attacks, but is willing to take decisive action when required.

He also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for adopting a “zero tolerance” approach to terrorism, stating that under his leadership, the government has made it clear that no act of terror will be accepted under any circumstances.

Focus on Root Causes of Terrorism

The Defence Minister highlighted that terrorism must be addressed across multiple dimensions—operational, ideological, and political. He stressed that merely targeting perpetrators is insufficient unless the underlying support systems are dismantled.

In a metaphorical reference, Singh likened terrorism to the mythological figure Ravana, suggesting that unless its “source of sustenance” is eliminated, it will continue to regenerate. “The ideological nourishment and political patronage of terrorism must be eradicated,” he said.

Strong Remarks on Pakistan

Singh reiterated India’s long-standing position on Pakistan’s alleged role in fostering terrorism. He described Pakistan as the “epicentre of international terrorism,” contrasting it with India’s global reputation as a leader in information technology.

He further revealed that during Operation Sindoor, India had faced nuclear threats but did not succumb to what he termed a “bluff.” Singh also highlighted the strength of India’s military-industrial capabilities, stating that they are designed not only for peacetime but also for rapid mobilisation during conflict.

Background of Operation Sindoor

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists. The operation marked a significant escalation in India’s counter-terror strategy.

Singh’s remarks reaffirm India’s position that it is prepared to take firm and sustained action against terrorism, while maintaining the flexibility to calibrate its responses based on strategic considerations.
