Dublin: In a disturbing incident underscoring renewed concerns over xenophobic violence in Ireland, an Indian nurse was brutally attacked in County Cavan, an area known for its sizeable expatriate population.
The victim, a native of Tripunithura in Kerala, was reportedly assaulted by a group of teenagers late at night. The incident occurred between approximately 10:00 pm and 2:00 am, when he had stepped out—initially to purchase milk and later stopped for a hot drink.
According to reports, the assailants shouted “Go back to India” before launching the attack, during which the victim was stabbed in the abdomen. Severely injured and bleeding, the young man managed to reach the roadside and flagged down a passing vehicle to seek help. He was subsequently rushed to Cavan General Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Hospital sources indicate that he is now out of danger.
Local police have launched an investigation into the incident, which has sent shockwaves through the expatriate community. County Cavan, located approximately 110 kilometres from Dublin, is home to a significant number of Indian healthcare workers.
The attack comes amid growing concerns over a resurgence of anti-immigrant sentiment in parts of Ireland. Local advisories have also warned about the increasing presence of substance-abusing youth groups during late-night hours, urging residents to remain vigilant.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of migrant communities and the urgent need for stronger measures to address hate-motivated crimes.
