Meath/New York: A 38-year-old Irish mother of three, Sharon Ball, has shared an emotional update following a critical surgery in New York, revealing she has been cleared to return home later this week as she prepares for the next phase of her treatment.
Sharon, a primary school teacher from Bohermeen near Kells in County Meath, is undergoing treatment for a rare and aggressive form of cancer — stage 4 skull-based osteosarcoma — diagnosed in October 2025. Earlier chemotherapy treatment in Ireland proved unsuccessful, prompting her to travel to the United States with her husband, Dermot, in search of advanced medical care.
In a major breakthrough, surgeons in New York successfully removed approximately 97% of the tumour during a complex operation last week, marking a significant milestone in her treatment journey.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Sharon expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received from family, friends, and the wider community.
“I can feel the prayers every day helping me to recover and heal,” she wrote, adding that she is “lost for words” at the scale of encouragement and solidarity extended to her.
She confirmed that she has now been granted permission to fly back to Ireland while awaiting confirmation of the next stage of treatment, which is expected to include proton radiation therapy and further chemotherapy.
Reflecting on her journey, Sharon credited the collective efforts of supporters for giving her renewed hope. “I owe this second chance at life to you all. I get to come home to hug and kiss my beautiful, resilient children again,” she said, describing her recovery as nothing short of a miracle.
She also paid tribute to the medical team in New York, describing them as “heroes” who “showed me the light,” and noted that the city had “opened its arms” to her during a challenging time.
While acknowledging that her treatment is far from complete, Sharon emphasised her determination to focus on the positives. “We know we’re not at the end of the line yet, but we will take every positive step forward,” she said.
Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign titled ‘Help Sharon Get Urgent Life-Saving Brain Surgery’ has raised more than €849,000, reflecting widespread public support as she continues her fight against the disease.
Her story has resonated deeply across communities, symbolising resilience, hope, and the power of collective compassion in the face of adversity.
