New Delhi: Proceedings in the Lok Sabha witnessed sharp exchanges on Friday after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “magician” during a debate, drawing strong objections from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Participatig in discussions on the Women’s Reservation Bill, Gandhi accused the government of attempting to redraw India’s political landscape out of political insecurity. He alleged that similar efforts had been undertaken in states such as Assam and regions like Jammu and Kashmir, and suggested that the ruling party was now seeking to extend such measures nationwide, which would require constitutional amendments.
Gandhi further contended that the government was aware the bill would face challenges in its current form and was acting out of political pressure. In a sarcastic remark that triggered the controversy, he referred to the Prime Minister as a “magician,” linking the comment to past policy decisions and events.
BJP Registers Strong Protest
The remarks prompted an immediate and forceful response from BJP members. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised Gandhi for using inappropriate language, stating that such comments undermined the dignity of the Prime Minister and, by extension, the country. He also objected to references made to sensitive matters such as the Balakot airstrikes.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to expunge the remarks from the official records, describing them as “extremely unfortunate.” He further called for an apology from Gandhi, stating that repeated use of such terms was disrespectful to the office of the Prime Minister.
Speaker’s Intervention
Speaker Om Birla intervened during the exchange, cautioning Gandhi against the use of unparliamentary language and directing him to confine his remarks to the subject under discussion. Responding to the Chair, Gandhi agreed to refrain from using the contested term going forward, though he maintained his broader criticism of the government.
He clarified that his remarks were directed at the ruling party as a political entity and not at the armed forces or the citizens of India, accusing the BJP of invoking national institutions to deflect political criticism.
Broader Political Context
The exchange comes amid ongoing debate over the implementation of women’s reservation, which the government has proposed to link with the delimitation exercise. Gandhi argued that such linkage could have significant implications for political representation across states, suggesting that the move may be aimed at restructuring electoral dynamics.
The incident underscores the increasingly charged political atmosphere in Parliament, as both sides intensify their positions on key legislative and constitutional issues.
