Israel has intensified its military campaign in Lebanon, targeting senior figures linked to Hezbollah in a series of coordinated strikes, according to official statements released on Thursday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that an airstrike conducted in Beirut on Wednesday killed a close aide to Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem. In its statement, the IDF identified the individual as Ali Youssef Harshi, described as Qassem’s personal secretary, nephew, and a key advisor within his inner circle. The Israeli military further noted that Harshi played a significant role in managing the operations of Qassem’s office and ensuring his security.
The targeted killing comes amid a broader escalation, with Israel launching widespread attacks across Lebanon beginning Wednesday. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation involved strikes on multiple Hezbollah command centers, resulting in what he described as the targeting of hundreds of militants. In a video message, Katz characterized the offensive as one of the most significant blows to Hezbollah since a previous operation in 2024, which reportedly involved explosive devices concealed in communication equipment.
Katz also reiterated Israel’s warning to Hezbollah leadership, emphasizing that actions taken under Iranian influence against Israel would carry severe consequences. He stated that the latest strikes represent a continuation of that policy.
The escalation follows the announcement of a ceasefire initiative involving Iran, reportedly backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. While Pakistan suggested that the agreement could extend to halting Israeli operations in Lebanon, both the United States and Israel clarified that Lebanon was not included within the scope of the ceasefire arrangement.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll continues to rise. According to reports citing Lebanese civil defense authorities, at least 254 people have been killed and over 1,100 injured in Israeli airstrikes. On Wednesday alone, Israeli aircraft struck multiple areas in central Beirut—including Mazraa, Manara, Ain al-Mreisseh, and Barbour—as well as several locations in the southern suburbs.
Hezbollah, in response, stated that the scale of the bombardment grants it the right to retaliate, raising concerns of further escalation in an already volatile region.
