The upcoming water metro stations at Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruth have generated optimism among residents of the island region. However, the poor condition of the narrow and dilapidated approach roads leading to these terminals remains a significant concern, potentially affecting seamless connectivity and overall usability.
“Even if the water metro stations become operational, the current state of these roads could hinder smooth access and limit effective utilisation,” said Kadamakkudy panchayat president M.S. Antony.
Responding to these concerns, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has initiated measures to widen and upgrade the approach roads. The agency will undertake the expansion and strengthening of a 1.4-kilometre stretch from Kadamakkudy Temple to Murikkal, where the terminal is located. Similarly, in Paliyamthuruth, the road from St. Francis Church in Pizhala to the proposed station will be renovated.
These works form part of a broader infrastructure enhancement plan accompanying the water metro project in the island belt. Additional interventions include shoreline protection measures and installation of street lighting at key locations. The initiatives follow formal requests from the Kadamakkudy panchayat.
According to sources, the Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruth terminals are now expected to become operational by June 2026. While initial completion was targeted for March, the timeline has been extended due to delays in critical components, including unfinished floating pontoons.
Beyond these two locations, several other water metro terminals are planned across the island cluster. These include Mulavukad, Ponnarimangalam, Chennur, Kothad, Pizhala, Thundathumkadavu, Chariyamthuruth, Elamkunnapuzha, and Moolampilly.
The phased rollout of these terminals is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across Kadamakkudy and neighbouring islands, while also unlocking new opportunities for tourism and regional development.
Operational Timeline:
Originally slated for completion in March 2026, the Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruth terminals are now expected to be commissioned by June 2026, pending completion of key infrastructure elements such as floating pontoons.
