As geopolitical tensions intensify in West Asia and the administration of Donald Trump continues to send mixed signals on the trajectory of the Iran conflict, India has moved swiftly to implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting its energy security and stabilising the domestic economy.
At the centre of global concern lies the Strait of Hormuz—a narrow yet vital maritime corridor through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas supplies transit. Any disruption in this chokepoint poses serious risks to global energy markets and import-dependent economies like India.
With markets on edge, New Delhi has adopted a proactive, multi-pronged approach to mitigate potential shocks arising from the conflict.
High-Level Strategic Coordination
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), bringing together key ministries to coordinate a nationwide response spanning energy, agriculture, logistics, and consumer affairs.
A Multi-Layered Energy Security Framework
1. Diversification of Energy Imports
India is actively reducing its dependence on West Asian suppliers by expanding sourcing networks for LPG and LNG. By engaging multiple international partners, the country aims to ensure continuity of supply even in the event of disruptions in critical maritime routes.
2. Strengthening Domestic Supply Systems
A robust internal distribution network is helping cushion external shocks. Approximately 50 lakh LPG cylinders are being delivered daily, while nearly three lakh new gas connections are being added. The expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure further enhances household energy security.
3. Ensuring Power Supply Stability
To prevent electricity shortages during peak summer demand, 7–8 GW of gas-based power plants have been exempted from pooling mechanisms. Coal supplies to thermal power stations have been increased, alongside higher LNG imports for power generation, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.
4. Protecting Agricultural Supply Chains
Recognising the link between energy and food security, the government is maintaining steady domestic urea production while coordinating global imports of DAP and NPK fertilisers. Authorities are also intensifying action against hoarding and black marketing to safeguard upcoming Kharif and Rabi crop cycles.
5. Price Stability and Market Oversight
To contain inflationary pressures, the government has established control rooms to monitor essential commodities. With food prices remaining stable in recent weeks, strict enforcement measures are in place to prevent hoarding and ensure consumer protection.
6. Securing Global Supply Routes
India is complementing domestic efforts with active diplomacy. Engagements with international partners are focused on maintaining the security of shipping routes and ensuring the continued viability of transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
7. Real-Time Coordination and Public Communication
Authorities are maintaining continuous coordination between central and state governments, supported by real-time monitoring systems. Clear public communication strategies are also being deployed to counter misinformation and prevent panic-driven market behaviour.
Preparedness Over Uncertainty
India’s response underscores a clear strategic intent: rather than waiting for clarity on the duration or outcome of the Iran conflict, the country is preparing for prolonged uncertainty. By diversifying energy sources, strengthening domestic supply chains, safeguarding agriculture, and maintaining price stability, India is building resilience across critical sectors.
Even if the conflict persists, India’s calibrated approach is designed to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies, stable markets, and the smooth functioning of essential services—reinforcing its ability to navigate a volatile global environment.
