Modi Targets ‘Infiltration’ in Bengal Poll Push, Promises Border Crackdown

Barrackpore, West Bengal | April 27, 2026  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign in West Bengal, warning that “infiltrators” would be identified and deported if the party comes to power in the state. Addressing a rally in Barrackpore ahead of Phase 2 of the Assembly elections, the Prime Minister reiterated the party’s long-standing position on illegal migration, particularly in border states.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has consistently framed the issue of undocumented migration—especially from neighbouring Bangladesh—as both a security concern and a socio-economic challenge. According to the party, unchecked migration affects demographic balance and places pressure on jobs, land, and welfare systems.

Sharp Criticism of TMC

In a direct attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress, Modi accused the party of failing to uphold its foundational slogan, “Maa, Maati, Manush.”

“‘Maa’ is in distress, ‘maati’ is under the control of infiltrators, and ‘manush’ is living in fear,” he said, alleging governance failures and a lack of direction for the state’s future.

He further criticised the TMC for what he described as deteriorating law and order, claiming that “syndicate networks” had flourished under its rule. “This is a form of jungle raj. The people of Bengal deserve better governance,” he asserted.

Amit Shah Echoes Hardline Stand

The Prime Minister’s remarks were reinforced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has previously pledged stringent border controls if the BJP assumes power in the state.

“Weeding out illegal infiltrators from West Bengal is our priority,” Shah said during an earlier campaign address. He also promised that the India-Bangladesh border would be fully secured, stating that fencing would be completed within a defined timeframe to prevent illegal crossings.

Development Promises and Welfare Push

Highlighting the BJP’s development agenda, Modi urged voters to support the party to enable a “double-engine government,” referring to alignment between state and central administrations.

He outlined a series of welfare and infrastructure commitments, including:

  • Expansion of the Kolkata Metro network
  • Introduction of electric bus systems
  • Financial assistance of ₹21,000 for women during pregnancy
  • 33% reservation for women in government jobs
  • Implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, offering health coverage up to ₹5 lakh for eligible citizens

The Prime Minister also emphasised ongoing central welfare measures, including free food grain distribution and healthcare benefits for economically weaker sections.

Confident Outlook Ahead of Results

Concluding his address, Modi expressed confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects, citing strong public turnout at campaign events.

“This is my final rally in this election campaign. I return with confidence that I will be back for the swearing-in ceremony after the results,” he said, referring to the upcoming declaration of results on May 4.

As the election progresses, the BJP’s campaign in West Bengal continues to focus on national security, governance, and welfare delivery, while mounting a direct challenge to the incumbent TMC government. The issue of illegal migration remains central to the party’s electoral messaging in the state.
