Munaf Patel Backs Gautam Gambhir, Highlights Challenges of Managing Star-Studded Indian Team

Former India cricketer Munaf Patel has strongly defended head coach Gautam Gambhir, asserting that removing a figure like him from the national setup would make managing the Indian men’s team significantly more difficult.

Speaking to The Times of India, Munaf emphasised that Gambhir’s defining strength lies in his honesty and uncompromising approach—qualities that, while essential, may not always be universally appreciated.

“Just remember this—if a head coach like Gautam Gambhir is removed, then handling the players will become very difficult. He is a genuine person; he speaks the truth as it is, and many people don’t like that,” Munaf remarked.

Widely regarded as one of the most demanding roles in international cricket, the position of head coach of the Indian men’s team involves managing immense expectations alongside a dressing room filled with high-profile players. In this context, Gambhir has distinguished himself with a firm, no-nonsense leadership style.

Munaf further noted that Gambhir does not hesitate to take tough decisions when required. “Everyone knows that if things go off track, he has the courage to drop players. Man-management is the most important aspect, and it isn’t easy. Try saying no to someone like Virat Kohli,” he added.

Under Gambhir’s tenure, India achieved notable success, including a T20 World Cup triumph, reinforcing his credentials as a leader capable of delivering results under pressure.

For over a decade, stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been central to India’s dominance across formats, with previous coaches such as Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid successfully managing the transition through their peak years.

However, Gambhir assumed charge in July 2024 during a pivotal phase for Indian cricket, as the team began navigating a generational shift. With a noticeable dip in Test performances, particularly from senior players, the current management has been compelled to make difficult decisions regarding the future of established stars.

“Try saying no to Rohit Sharma. Tell me, how many people is Gautam Gambhir making enemies of just to coach the country?” Munaf questioned, underscoring the personal and professional challenges involved in the role.

As India gradually transitions away from long-serving icons in the red-ball format, Gambhir’s tenure is shaping up to be a defining period—marked by bold calls, evolving team dynamics, and the pursuit of long-term stability.
