The death of a 23-year-old student from Amity University in Noida has taken a dramatic turn, with police registering a murder case following allegations raised by the victim’s family.
The deceased, identified as Harshit Bhatt, was initially believed to have drowned in a water-filled construction pit. However, injuries found on his body and a formal complaint from his family have prompted authorities to treat the case as suspected homicide.
An FIR has been registered at the Sector 126 Police Station against three of his friends—Vyas, Krish, and Himanshu—who were reportedly present with him at the time of the incident.
Sequence of Events
According to a report by The Times of India, Harshit had gone to a construction site with the three friends after completing his sixth-semester examinations.
The group allegedly entered the abandoned Noida Habitat and Convention Centre through a damaged section of the boundary wall.
CCTV footage reportedly shows the four purchasing alcohol from a nearby shop at around 2:45 pm. Police believe they were under the influence of alcohol when they entered the water-filled pit at approximately 3:30 pm. Beer cans and liquor bottles were later recovered from the site.
What Happened at the Site?
According to statements given by the friends, Harshit was the first to enter the pit. After initially swimming near the edge, he moved toward the centre, where the water was significantly deeper and the base muddy.
One of the friends attempted to rescue him but reportedly got stuck in the sludge. Emergency response teams, including the police, NDRF, SDRF, and fire services, were called in.
Rescuers eventually pulled Harshit out from a point nearly 10 metres from the edge of the pit. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Why the Case Has Taken a New Turn
The case escalated after Harshit’s mother, Deepmala, disputed the drowning narrative. She pointed to visible injuries on her son’s body and alleged foul play.
Based on her complaint, police registered a case under murder charges against the three friends. Investigators have stated that all angles, including the possibility of homicide, are being thoroughly examined.
Authorities have not ruled out any scenario and are continuing their probe to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the student’s death.
