A spell of rain accompanied by strong winds swept across New Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, offering much-needed respite from the prevailing heatwave. The sudden change in weather was marked by gusty winds, dark cloud cover, and scattered showers across adjoining areas, including Noida and Ghaziabad.
Several locations reported intensified weather activity, with rain and hailstorms observed near the Delhi–Noida border. Parts of Sahibabad in Ghaziabad district also experienced hail, accompanied by strong winds that swept through the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting light rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds of up to 50 kmph. An orange alert was issued for Noida and Ghaziabad, where heavier rainfall and more intense thunderstorm activity were predicted during the evening hours.
Weather Shift Extends to Rajasthan
The changing weather pattern was not limited to the NCR. Parts of Rajasthan also witnessed light rain and drizzle, providing partial relief from ongoing heatwave conditions. According to the IMD’s Jaipur centre, isolated areas experienced warm nights, while thunderstorms and gusty winds were recorded in several regions over the past 24 hours.
Kota reported the highest rainfall in the state at 20.6 mm during this period. Maximum temperatures across Rajasthan have shown a slight decline, ranging between 40°C and 42°C—close to seasonal norms. The weather department has indicated a further drop of 1–2 degrees Celsius in daytime temperatures over the next few days.
Western Disturbance Behind Sudden Change
Meteorological experts attribute the abrupt shift in weather to a Western Disturbance affecting northwestern India. The system, coupled with a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining regions of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, has contributed to the current conditions.
While the rainfall and winds are expected to bring temporary cooling, experts have also cautioned about the likelihood of dust storms in the coming days. The prevailing system may carry desert dust from Rajasthan toward Delhi-NCR, potentially impacting air quality even as temperatures dip.
Overall, the combined effect of showers and gusty winds is expected to provide short-term relief from the heat, though weather conditions may stabilise again in the days ahead.
