No Immediate Leadership Change in Karnataka, Decision ‘Soon’: Mallikarjun Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday clarified that there is no immediate plan to change leadership in Karnataka, even as speculation continues within party circles. He assured that the matter would be resolved “soon,” but only after due consultation with the party’s top leadership.

Addressing reporters, Kharge emphasised that any decision regarding a possible change in the Chief Minister’s post would take time and follow established internal processes. “There is already a Chief Minister here,” he said, referring to the current leadership under Siddaramaiah.

He further noted that any decision would be taken collectively in consultation with senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. “If we have to take any decision in that direction, it will take some time. Let us wait and see,” he added.

Speculation Around Leadership Dynamics

The remarks come amid ongoing speculation over a possible leadership change or power-sharing arrangement, particularly involving Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, whose supporters have been advocating for his elevation.

Kharge, however, struck a measured tone, reiterating that there is no immediate change under consideration and that the party leadership will address the issue through internal deliberations.

Kharge Dismisses CM Speculation Around Himself

Responding to suggestions that he himself could be considered for the Chief Minister’s post—an idea reportedly mentioned by Home Minister G Parameshwara—Kharge dismissed such speculation.

“You, he, and others may say so, but decisions about me are taken by Sonia Gandhi based on my role and service to the party,” he said, adding that the question of him assuming the role “does not arise at present.”

Reaction to MLA Movement Claims

Kharge also responded to claims by JD(S) leader and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy that around 40 Congress MLAs had booked travel to Delhi amid the leadership discussions. He distanced himself from the assertion, offering no confirmation of such developments.

Internal Matter, Says Congress Leadership

The developments come as the Congress government in Karnataka crosses the midway mark of its tenure, reviving discussions around a reported power-sharing understanding between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar when the party assumed office in 2023.

Despite the speculation, Kharge reiterated that the issue would be handled internally. “We will resolve it as soon as possible,” he said, signalling that while the leadership is aware of the situation, no immediate decision is being rushed.
