NASHIK — A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Nashik police has arrested eight individuals, including a female operations manager, following a series of harrowing allegations involving sexual harassment and forced religious conversion at the local branch of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
The arrests come in the wake of nine First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by more than half a dozen female employees. The lead complainant, a newly married associate who joined the IT giant in June 2025, has provided a detailed testimony of a workplace culture allegedly defined by predatory behavior, communal slurs, and physical assault.
Details of the Allegations
According to police statements, the victim’s ordeal began shortly after her marriage during her initial training phase. She alleges that she was frequently targeted by Raza Memon, a Team Lead from a separate department, and her own training leader, Shahrukh Qureshi.
The victim claims she was subjected to:
- Persistent Harassment: Memon allegedly nicknamed her "Player" and frequently made inappropriate inquiries into her personal life and the nature of her marriage.
- Physical Assault: In a specific incident during the Gudi Padwa festival in March, the victim alleged that Memon physically pulled at her saree in the office lobby.
- Inappropriate Conduct: Another employee, Asif Ansari, is accused of repeated instances of non-consensual touching, including grabbing the victim’s waist and thighs, and forcibly embracing her in a gallery.
- Coercion and Threats: The complainant alleges that when she rebuffed advances or blocked colleagues on social media, she was met with professional threats and derogatory remarks regarding Hindu deities.
Corporate and Political Response
TCS, India’s largest private-sector employer, has moved to suspend the accused employees. In an official statement, the company reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward harassment and coercion. However, the firm noted that a preliminary internal review of their ethics and Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) channels showed no prior formal complaints of this specific nature. To ensure transparency, TCS has announced the formation of an oversight panel and the engagement of external investigators.
The case has also drawn significant political attention. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis characterized the situation as a matter of "serious concern," suggesting the allegations point toward a deeper pattern of "corporate jihad."
Defense and Counter-Claims
Family members of Raza Memon have vehemently denied the charges, labeling them a "coordinated conspiracy." Speaking to PTI, Memon’s uncle, Ayaz Kazi, argued that the allegations are rooted in professional rivalry and office politics, intended to derail the career of a "high performer." The family also alleged communal discrimination, questioning why superior officers of different faiths have not faced similar scrutiny.
Current Status
The SIT continues its investigation into the broader scope of the allegations, as more women have come forward with similar accounts of misconduct. The eight arrested individuals remain in police custody as authorities work to determine the veracity of the claims and whether these incidents indicate a systemic failure in workplace safety and professional conduct at the Nashik facility.
