U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that there had been “some good news” regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran, while cautioning that a temporary ceasefire may not be extended beyond Wednesday if upcoming negotiations fail to produce a lasting agreement.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump did not elaborate on the reported development but indicated cautious optimism about progress in the Middle East. He added that while the United States may reconsider extending the two-week ceasefire, its naval blockade would remain in place. Trump warned that failure to reach a deal could result in renewed military action.
He also rejected the possibility of Iran imposing tolls or restricting passage through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that such measures would not be permitted.
The remarks followed Iran’s decision to temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz after a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon. Despite welcoming the reopening, Trump reiterated that U.S. restrictions on vessels linked to Iran would continue until a comprehensive agreement is achieved. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that while the strait is open for global transit, the blockade targeting Iranian activity remains fully in force.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor responsible for roughly 20% of global oil and gas shipments, had been severely disrupted since late February due to escalating hostilities, including U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions. The resulting instability led to significant increases in global energy prices.
Iran has responded firmly to the continued blockade. Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that the strait could be closed again if U.S. restrictions persist, adding that any future passage may require Iranian authorization.
A new round of U.S.-Iran negotiations is scheduled to take place in Islamabad on April 20, following an earlier round of talks that ended without agreement. Meanwhile, Trump has asserted that the United States intends to secure Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium, a claim that Iranian officials have rejected, insisting the material will remain under their control.
