New Delhi: Women voters recorded higher participation than men across all three regions—Assam, Kerala and Puducherry—that went to the polls on April 9, according to gender-disaggregated data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday.
This trend mirrors the pattern observed in the previous assembly elections held in 2021, underscoring a sustained rise in female electoral participation.
Among the three regions, Puducherry registered the highest female turnout at 91.40%, significantly ahead of male participation at 88.13%. The Union Territory recorded an overall voter turnout of 89.87%—its highest since 2011. Notably, women have consistently outvoted men in Puducherry across multiple election cycles, with female turnout rising from 86.29% in 2011 to 82.20% in 2021, and now reaching a record high.
In Assam, female turnout stood at 86.50%, marginally surpassing the male turnout of 85.33%. The state recorded an overall turnout of 85.91%, the highest in its electoral history. The upward trend in female participation has been evident over successive elections, with women voters exceeding or matching male turnout in both 2016 and 2021.
Kerala also witnessed a notable gender gap in voter participation, with 81.19% of women casting their votes compared to 75.19% of men. The state’s overall turnout stood at 78.27%, an increase from 76% in the 2021 assembly elections. Women have consistently led voter participation in Kerala in recent election cycles, continuing a pattern established in 2016 and 2021.
The increase in overall turnout across all three regions has been partly attributed to electoral roll revisions—special intensive revisions in Kerala and Puducherry, and a special revision exercise in Assam—which streamlined voter lists and contributed to higher participation rates.
The data highlights a continuing shift in India’s electoral landscape, with women emerging as a decisive and increasingly active segment of the electorate.
