Islamabad: Pakistan is hosting high-stakes diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran as efforts intensify to de-escalate the ongoing Gulf conflict. The Iranian delegation, led by Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, has arrived in the Pakistani capital, while the US side is represented by Vice President JD Vance.
The negotiations follow weeks of heightened tensions triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which escalated into a broader regional confrontation. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, disrupted maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz, and driven a sharp surge in global oil prices.
Pakistan, which played a key role in brokering a temporary two-week ceasefire earlier this week, is now facilitating indirect negotiations between the two sides. Delegations are expected to remain in separate rooms at a hotel in Islamabad, with Pakistani officials shuttling between them to mediate discussions.
However, critical differences persist. A major sticking point remains Lebanon, where Iran is pushing for any ceasefire agreement to include a halt to Israeli military operations. The United States and Israel have so far resisted this demand. Ongoing hostilities in the region continue to cast uncertainty over the outcome of the talks, raising concerns that the fragile diplomatic process could yet unravel.
