Bengaluru’s Second International Airport Gains Momentum, Southern Corridor Emerges as Leading Contender

Bengaluru’s long-anticipated second international airport project is moving into a decisive stage, with strong indications that the proposed site will be located in the southern part of the city. Although a final decision is yet to be announced, government signals and ongoing feasibility studies suggest that locations along Kanakapura Road are currently leading the race.

Speaking at a recent summit, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar confirmed that the state’s technology capital will host its second airport in South Bengaluru. Among the shortlisted options, Chudahalli and Somanahalli have emerged as frontrunners. A third site near Nelamangala–Kunigal Road in the western corridor remains under consideration, though current indications favour the southern cluster due to its connectivity advantages and future expansion potential.

Rising Demand Drives Urgency

The push for a second airport comes amid sustained growth in passenger and cargo traffic at Kempegowda International Airport, which currently serves as the city’s primary aviation hub. Despite phased capacity expansions, demand is projected to outpace existing infrastructure in the coming years.

Bengaluru’s older aviation facility, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited airport, now handles limited operations and lacks the scope for large-scale commercial expansion. This has left the city heavily reliant on a single major airport—an increasingly unsustainable model for a metropolitan centre of Bengaluru’s scale and economic significance.

Comprehensive Feasibility Study Underway

To determine the most suitable site, the Karnataka government has commissioned a detailed feasibility study by a Meinhardt–KPMG consortium. The project, valued at ₹4.96 crore, is expected to be completed within five months.

The study will evaluate a wide range of parameters, including:

  • Technical aspects such as topography, soil conditions, and drainage
  • Airspace management and proximity to existing aviation infrastructure
  • Connectivity through road, rail, and planned transit networks
  • Environmental and regulatory considerations
  • Long-term projections for passenger and cargo demand over a 35-year horizon

The final decision will be guided by a balance of operational efficiency, scalability, and economic viability.

Land Availability and Connectivity Key to Decision

Each of the shortlisted sites has approximately 4,500 acres earmarked for development, ensuring sufficient capacity for a greenfield airport. However, connectivity remains a critical differentiating factor.

The Kanakapura Road sites benefit from proximity to Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding southern growth corridor, which includes emerging residential and industrial zones. In contrast, the Nelamangala site offers access to the Tumakuru Road industrial belt but faces challenges in aligning with the city’s dominant urban expansion trends.

Authorities are also evaluating how the new airport will integrate with Bengaluru’s broader mobility ecosystem, including highways and potential rail linkages.

Strategic and Regional Considerations

The urgency surrounding the project is further underscored by regional competition. Tamil Nadu is accelerating plans for a new international airport in Hosur, near the Karnataka border—a development that could potentially divert traffic and investment if Bengaluru delays its expansion.

With the city’s population surpassing 13 million and vehicle numbers rising sharply, infrastructure pressure continues to mount. Policymakers increasingly view the second airport not merely as a transport solution, but as a long-term economic catalyst capable of reshaping regional growth.

The Road Ahead

While political signals appear to favour the Kanakapura Road corridor, the final decision will hinge on the findings of the feasibility study. The Karnataka government is expected to take a definitive call once the report is submitted and reviewed.

If current trends persist, Bengaluru’s next aviation hub is likely to take shape in its southern arc—marking a transformative step in the city’s infrastructure and connectivity landscape for decades to come.
