In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Indian National Congress has formally ended its 55-year-long alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and announced full support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam for the formation of a new government in the state.
In an official statement, the Congress clarified that its alliance with TVK is not limited to the immediate task of government formation but is intended as a long-term political partnership. The collaboration, it said, will extend to future elections, including local body polls, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha contests.
“This alliance is built on mutual respect, equitable partnership, and shared responsibility between both parties. It is not just for forming the present government but also for future electoral engagements,” the party stated while formally announcing its alignment with TVK.
The Congress also set a key condition for its support, emphasising that any “communal forces that do not believe in the Indian Constitution” must be kept out of the alliance. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) unanimously backed the decision to support TVK under this framework.
‘Alliances Form and Break in Politics’: Jyothimani
Commenting on the decision to part ways with the DMK, Congress MP Jyothimani described the move as a natural progression in political dynamics.
“Forming and breaking alliances is a normal part of politics,” she said, recalling that the DMK had itself removed Congress from their long-standing alliance just a week before the 2014 parliamentary elections, forcing the party to contest independently.
“The Congress has travelled with the DMK for a long time, and naturally, there have been ups and downs. Considering the welfare and future of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has unanimously decided to align with TVK,” she said.
Jyothimani stressed that the decision should be viewed as a political stance rather than a confrontation, urging both sides to maintain decorum. She also noted that Congress had refrained from harsh criticism when the DMK severed ties in 2014, recognising it as a political decision.
“In the current context, especially after the DMK’s electoral setback and the defeat of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, it would not be appropriate to engage in harsh criticism. Such conduct does not reflect political decency or the culture of the Congress party,” she added.
Changing Political Landscape
The decision comes amid visible signs of strain in Congress-DMK relations in recent months. Notably, senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi and M. K. Stalin did not share the campaign stage during the election period, signalling growing distance between the two allies.
The political shift follows the Assembly election results, where TVK emerged as the single largest party. However, with a shortfall of 10 seats to reach a majority, the question of post-poll alliances became central to government formation.
According to Congress, Vijay formally sought the party’s support to form the government. With the alliance now officially in place, the path for government formation appears clearer.
Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony in Chennai, marking the beginning of a new political chapter in Tamil Nadu.
