SHIMLA — A forensic investigation is underway following a fatal vehicular accident on the Bharwain-Hoshiarpur Road, where two individuals lost their lives after their car plummeted into a deep gorge and ignited.
The incident occurred on a treacherous stretch of highway characterized by steep gradients and acute bends—a section authorities have officially designated as a "black spot" due to its high accident frequency.
Analysis of CCTV Footage
Surveillance footage recovered from the vicinity has provided crucial insights into the moments leading up to the tragedy. The visuals depict the vehicle approaching a sharp curve where a standard maneuver was required. However, the car failed to navigate the turn, continuing on a linear path toward a damaged section of the carriageway.
Notably, the footage reveals flames emanating from the rear of the vehicle seconds before it reached the broken edge of the road and descended into the abyss.
Investigative Findings and "Black Spot" Hazards
Preliminary reports from the site suggest that environmental and mechanical factors may have converged to cause the disaster:
- Suspected Mechanical Failure: Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion immediately before the vehicle veered off course. Investigators are currently exploring the possibility of a high-speed tyre burst, which could account for both the sound and the driver's subsequent loss of control.
- Infrastructure Deficiencies: The accident occurred at a point where the road surface was partially compromised. The broken edge of the asphalt offered no resistance or barrier, leading directly into the steep ravine.
Emergency Response
Recovery teams faced significant challenges due to the terrain and the post-crash fire. While local authorities have secured the site, the incident has renewed calls for urgent infrastructure repairs on the Bharwain-Hoshiarpur stretch to mitigate the dangers posed by its notorious "black spots."
The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of kin.
