Chennai: The body of a 10-year-old girl who went missing from Kannampalayam village in Coimbatore district on Thursday evening was found. Two people have been arrested in the incident. Government will ensure maximum punishment for accused in Coimbatore girl murder case.
It is suspected that the girl was raped and murdered. The girl, a class 4 student, lived with her parents in Pallapalayam Bharathipuram in Sulur taluk. The girl went missing on Thursday evening while playing near her house. After realizing that the girl was missing, her parents and neighbours started a search. The family filed a complaint at the Sulur police station saying that the girl was missing. On Friday evening, locals found her body floating in a large pond in Kannampalayam, about 1.5 km from the girl's house. The police took out the body and sent it for postmortem.
Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar on Saturday said the Tamil Nadu government would ensure maximum punishment for the accused in the murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district and expedite legal proceedings in the case.
Addressing reporters in Coimbatore, the Minister said the police acted swiftly after information about the incident was received on Friday night and arrested the two accused. He said both had been remanded in judicial custody and that instructions had been given to file the charge sheet at the earliest after the post-mortem report was received.
He said the State government was committed to securing the maximum punishment for the accused and would provide necessary relief to the family. “Criminals must fear,” he said, adding that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had emphasised the need for stringent punishment to deter such crimes.
