NEW DELHI / BHUBANESWAR: In a comprehensive report detailing the nation’s social evolution, the Government of India on Wednesday released the "Women and Men in India 2025: Selected Indicators and Data" publication.
The findings, unveiled in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, underscore a positive shift in demographic trends, health outcomes, and economic engagement for women across the country.
Demographic Gains: A Rising Sex Ratio
One of the most significant highlights of the report is the notable improvement in India’s Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB). The ratio has climbed from 904 (recorded during 2017–19) to 917 in the 2021–23 period. This upward trend serves as a critical indicator of improved survival rates for female infants and the gradual success of social interventions aimed at balancing the national demographic.
Accompanying this shift is a "pronounced and sustained decline" in the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) for both sexes between 2008 and 2023, reflecting strengthened maternal and childcare infrastructure.
Education and Economic Empowerment
The data reveals that women are increasingly outperforming men in educational enrollment and shattering glass ceilings in the corporate world.
Key Socio-Economic Indicators:
- Higher Education: The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for females rose from 28.5 to 30.2 between 2021–22 and 2022–23, notably surpassing the male growth rate (28.3 to 28.9).
- Workforce Surge: The Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above saw a healthy increase. Rural women led this growth, with participation jumping from 37.5% to 45.9% between 2022 and 2025.
- Leadership Roles: Between 2017 and 2025, the number of women in managerial positions soared by 102.54%, significantly outpacing the 73.80% increase recorded for men in similar roles.
Data-Driven Governance
Released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the publication compiles gender-disaggregated data across vital themes, including health, economic participation, decision-making, and safety.
According to an official statement, the report aims to "enable a deeper understanding of evolving gender disparities and development trends." To ensure transparency and academic rigor, MoSPI has included detailed metadata for 50 key indicators, clarifying the methodologies and sources used.
The full publication is now available on the official MoSPI website, serving as a primary resource for policymakers, researchers, and international observers tracking India’s progress toward gender equality.
