KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday dismissed the recently released exit poll projections, characterizing them as a psychological tactic intended to demoralize party workers.
As the state gears up for the official counting of votes on May 4, Banerjee asserted that the ground reality heavily favors the incumbent government.
Countering the Narrative: "Calculated Psychological Warfare"
In a video message addressed to the electorate and her party cadre, the Chief Minister challenged the credibility of pollsters, alleging that the projections were skewed to create a false perception of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surge.
"These numbers are being used to weaken the morale of our workers ahead of the counting day," Banerjee stated. She noted that similar discrepancies between exit polls and final results had occurred in previous election cycles, and maintained that the "mood on the ground" remains firmly with the TMC.
Bold Predictions for the "Ma Mati Manush" Government
Defying the conservative estimates provided by various agencies, Banerjee predicted a decisive mandate for her party.
- Projected Seat Count: The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the TMC would comfortably cross the majority mark, aiming for a figure exceeding 226 seats in the 294-member Assembly.
- The Mandate: Reaffirming her "Mother-Land-People" philosophy, she claimed that the verdict would be a validation of her government's welfare schemes and regional identity.
- A Final Rallying Cry: Striking a defiant tone, she concluded her message with the slogan, "Joy Bangla!"
A Call for Vigilance: Counting Day Protocol
Beyond the rhetoric, the Chief Minister issued a strategic directive to her supporters, emphasizing the need for extreme caution during the tallying process. With the final count scheduled for Sunday, May 4, Banerjee called for a "tight-fisted" approach to monitoring the results.
"I urge our cadre to remain alert on counting day. Guard your candidates and closely monitor every round of the process," she instructed.
The TMC leadership has indicated that it will implement a robust booth-level and counting-center monitoring system. Banerjee herself intends to remain at the helm of a central command center to oversee developments in real-time, underscoring the party's determination to protect its mandate.
The Road to May 4
As West Bengal stands on the precipice of a high-stakes political transition, the Chief Minister's rejection of exit polls sets the stage for a tense and highly anticipated counting day. While pollsters suggest a tightening race, the TMC’s confidence suggests a belief that their organizational strength and grassroots reach will once again defy expectations.
