The European Union (EU) is introducing new rules to prioritize the durability and ease of repair of smartphones.
Upcoming EU battery rules (by 2027) for user-replaceable batteries:
By February 18, 2027, all smartphones and tablets sold in the EU must have batteries that can be easily removed and replaced by users themselves.
No special tools required:The design should be such that batteries can be replaced using commonly available tools, avoiding adhesive-fastened and non-openable methods.
Ensuring availability
Even if a phone model is discontinued, manufacturers must make its batteries available for the next 5 years.
Battery passports:
There should be QR codes containing the battery's capacity, lifespan, and chemical composition.
Current situation
Currently, most phones have their batteries built into the inside to reduce their size and make them waterproof.
To change this, companies including Apple and Samsung will have to come up with new designs.
A few phones, like the Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro, now have the option to replace the battery.
Other rules
USB Type-C: The EU had earlier made it mandatory for all smartphones to have a uniform USB Type-C charging port.
