While initial media narratives framed the image as the exact "first look" of the train, the Railway Board subsequently clarified that the display is strictly a representational look. It illustrates a streamlined white-and-orange aerodynamic design rather than the absolute finalized engineering build.
The ambitious 508-km infrastructure project is being developed in collaboration with Japan, leveraging advanced Shinkansen high-speed rail technology. The network will link 12 major stations across Gujarat and Maharashtra, including Mumbai (BKC), Surat, and Ahmedabad.
Once operational, the train will reach speeds of up to 320 km/h, slashing commuter travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad down to approximately two hours. The primary operational stretch (connecting Surat to Bilimora) is targeting a phased trial launch, with a full corridor operational target currently tracking toward 2027–2029
River Bridges: Out of the 25 planned river bridges, 17 have been fully completed, including major river crossings across Gujarat.
Steel Bridges: Out of the planned steel bridges along the route, 13 have been finished. A major milestone includes the completion of a 100-meter "Make in India" steel bridge spanning over the underground metro tunnel in Ahmedabad.
Viaducts: Viaduct construction (the elevated track structure) has been completed for over 340 kilometers out of the total 508 km route.2. Undersea Tunnel StatusThane Creek Tunnel: India's first 7-kilometer-long undersea rail tunnel is being constructed as part of a larger 21-kilometer underground tunnel stretch between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata.
Machinery Deployment (TBM): To excavate the undersea stretch, India’s largest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)—featuring a 13.6-meter diameter cutter head—has been successfully lowered, assembled, and activated at the Vikhroli shaft in Mumbai.
Other Excavation Progress: Over 5 kilometers of the underground section have already been excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).
Estimated Ticket FaresBase Pricing: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) indicates that the full journey from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will cost approximately ₹3,000. Short-distance fares are expected to start at ₹250.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated in Parliament that fares will remain affordable, keeping them highly competitive with current First Class AC train fares and domestic flight tickets.Additionally, track bed installation utilizing the Japanese J-Slab system has crossed the 180-kilometer mark.
