WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — The shadow war in the Middle East broke into the open following a fierce exchange of retaliatory maritime strikes between the United States and Iran.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American fighter jets and drones struck and disabled three crude oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Tehran fired back swiftly, with state media reporting that Iranian forces subsequently targeted multiple vessels in unauthorized routes of the Strait of Hormuz alongside U.S.-affiliated ships. The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the American operations as an illegal "war crime" designed to ramp up economic warfare against the country, warning of even more severe retaliatory measures should U.S. naval interference continue.

The latest hostilities have effectively ended a fragile, month-long lull in the ongoing conflict, sending shockwaves through global energy markets and heightening fears of a prolonged disruption to international commercial shipping through the vital strait.
