US F-35 Lightning II fighter jet sends emergency distress signal near Strait of Hormuz - Iran
Iran claimed that a US warplane announced an emergency distress signal in the sky while flying near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday (May 10).
Iran said the plane, identified as a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, transmitted emergency code 7700 - an emergency distress signal. This comes amid ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington over a strategic waterway. The incident has not been confirmed by the US.
According to flight tracking data from FlightRadar24, the plane was flying over the Gulf of Oman and heading towards UAE airspace. "Sending this code indicates an immediate emergency situation, where a landing is required," it added.
What is emergency code 7700?
In aviation, the emergency code 7700 is a transponder “squawk” code used by pilots to declare a general emergency. When a pilot enters this four-digit code on an aircraft’s transponder, it immediately notifies air traffic control (ATC) and surrounding radar facilities that the aircraft requires priority handling and assistance. The code can be used for a variety of problems, including mechanical failures, onboard accidents, or as a precautionary measure.
