New Delhi: Vijay's Tamil Nadu-led Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam has secured the majority needed to form the government in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, according to reports.
Reports indicate that Vijay has received the support of Congress, VCK and Left parties. 118 seats are required to form the government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The Congress with five MLAs and the CPI, CPM and VCK with two MLAs each have decided to support TVK with 107 MLAs. With this, Vijay's alliance has reached the magic number of 118. Vijay will meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Friday evening with documents proving his majority and stake his claim to form the government.
The election results released on May 4 did not show a clear majority for anyone. Although TVK was the single largest party, the Governor was not ready to invite Vijaya to form the government, citing that it could not prove its majority. In the wake of the political uncertainty that ensued, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and others intervened and secured support.
Despite supporting Vijay, his political style has been criticized by his allies. VCK leader Chintanai Selvan had publicly criticized Vijay's move to seek support through WhatsApp messages without meeting his allies in person. However, she clarified that she was supporting Vijay to prevent him from using the Governor to impose BJP rule in Tamil Nadu.
CPM General Secretary M.A. Baby said that the party leadership in the state can take an appropriate decision on supporting Vijay in Tamil Nadu. The CPM General Secretary's words come as the uncertainty related to government formation in Tamil Nadu continues. He was speaking at a press conference in Delhi. He clarified that this position was reached after discussions with the national leadership of the CPI and VCK parties. M.A. Baby said that Vijay had asked for only two weeks to prove his majority, but the Governor is violating the convention.
