West Bengal new chief minister announced, West Bengal is set to have its first BJP government after senior party leader Suvendu Adhikari was elected as the BJP legislature party leader on Friday, paving the way for him to take oath as the chief minister.
The BJP legislature party meeting was held in Kolkata under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who formally announced the name of Adhikari after receiving the support of newly elected MLAs and senior leaders.
"I announce the election of Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the West Bengal BJP legislature party," Amit Shah said at the meeting.
The BJP has secured a historic victory in the assembly elections, ending the 15-year rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress by winning 208 seats. The verdict marked the BJP's biggest ever victory in Bengal politics, completing a rapid rise that began after the 2021 elections.
Adhikari's elevation comes after a long-standing political feud with Banerjee, who has reshaped Bengal politics. After defeating Adhikari in Nandigram in 2021, Adhikari re-emerged as a central figure for the BJP by defeating Banerjee in Bhabanipur, considered his safest political seat, in 2026. The BJP saw the victory in Bhabanipur as both symbolic and strategic, cementing Adhikari's position as the party's most powerful leader in Bengal.
A former Trinamool Congress functionary and once a close aide of Banerjee, Adhikari joined the BJP in December 2020 after differences with the TMC leadership. His move significantly strengthened the BJP's grassroots network, especially in coastal Bengal and East Midnapore.
The swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government will be held at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on May 9, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior NDA leaders are expected to attend.
