Washington: Iran has dismissed US President Donald Trump's claim that a final peace deal has been reached with Iran as mere speculation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaiei said no final agreement had been reached with the US. Trump had previously said that the time and place for the signing of the peace agreement would be announced soon and that it would be signed in Europe by this weekend. However, Iranian official media reported that Iran has not yet reached a final decision on the agreement.
Trump claimed at a televised rally by Senate candidate Barry Moore that a deal had been reached with Iran and that regional countries had approved it. He said that Iran had agreed not to build nuclear weapons, and that he had therefore ordered a temporary halt to attacks on Iran.
On Thursday, Trump threatened to seize Iran's main oil hub, Kharg Island, and launch a major attack. However, Trump quickly backtracked, saying that the attack plan had been scrapped following talks with Arab nations and that peace talks were complete.
Meanwhile, Iran's Tasnim news agency cited Trump's past statements. Trump has announced 38 times in the past two months that a peace deal is imminent, and warned that such propaganda should be viewed as previous statements until there is official confirmation.
Local media reported that people fled from the Iranian capital, Tehran, to the Caspian Sea coast and suffered severe traffic jams following the threat of a US attack. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that Iran would never give in to threats and would respond strongly to any move against it.
