Tehran: Iran has claimed that it has launched drone attacks on US military camps in Kuwait and Bahrain in response to US military actions. According to a statement released by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the airstrikes on Thursday targeted the Sheikh Issa Air Base in Bahrain and the Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al-Jaber Air Bases in Kuwait. Hours earlier, Iran had announced that it had also attacked two oil tankers that were trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Kuwait and Bahrain have ordered their people to move to safer places as attack sirens sounded in the region. The incident, which is a major setback for Middle East peace efforts, has sent oil prices up by more than two dollars per barrel in the international market.
The Kuwaiti military has officially announced that its air defense system successfully repelled Iranian missiles and drones. However, the civil aviation authorities stated that Kuwaiti airspace was temporarily closed for security reasons. Meanwhile, the Jordanian army also confirmed that it had fired five missiles targeting the Al-Azraq region in Jordan; however, there were no reports of casualties or other damage. The Israeli army has also responded to the attacks carried out by Lebanon in northern Israel. IRGC Aerospace Force Chief Majid Mousavi warned that the conflict zone would become a hell if the US continued to carry out attacks. Meanwhile, there were reports of a series of powerful explosions near Iran's Gorgan port.
The US Central Command responded that Iran's claim that it had closed the disputed Strait of Hormuz was false. The US clarified that commercial ships were still passing safely and that Iranian media reports that a US warship was attacked in Hormuz were baseless. The two sides have been engaged in fierce attacks and counterattacks for the past two days. Following the downing of a US military helicopter in an Iranian attack, the US launched attacks on strategic Iranian facilities and water reservoirs. Iran has called the US action to destroy its water reservoirs a war crime.
India is monitoring the situation with extreme caution as the movement of goods in the region has once again come to a standstill. India had expressed its strong dissatisfaction with the ship attack that took place off the coast of Oman the previous day. As part of this, India summoned US Charge d'Affaires Jason Meeks and lodged an official protest. There is strong concern about how the war-like atmosphere in the Middle East will affect the global economy and the energy security of countries including India.
