Renee Mayhofer, former Android security director, has announced her resignation from Google. The resignation is in protest of Google's AI deal with the Pentagon. He alleges that management has lost the company's moral foundation.
Business Insider reports that Mayhofer's objection is due to the company's decision to allow the Pentagon to use Google's Gemini AI for covert military operations. In a statement announcing his resignation, he said he would not work for the US military, even indirectly, at war. He also said that knowingly harming someone is something he cannot accept and does not want.
Google signed a deal with the Department of Defense, which the Trump administration recently renamed the Department of War, in late April. The deal allowed the Pentagon to use Google Gemini for any legal purpose in its secret systems. Similar deals were made with Sam Altman's Open AI and Elon Musk's XAI. It is said that the wording of the deal angered Mayhofer. "Google has signed a deal with the US Department of War. It has been proven time and again that any 'legal purpose' in such cars would violate international law.
Decisions are made at the highest levels without any discussion. None of this is discussed or communicated within the company," he alleges. He was an engineer who led the security team for the Android platform until 2019. He was later transferred to Austria and moved to another role. He later moved to the post of principal software engineer. An open letter signed by him and others had previously urged Google to abandon a Pentagon contract. At that time, Google CEO Sundar Pichai's AI principles excluded weapons and surveillance systems. Meanwhile, Mayhofer is not the only one who has signed an open letter this time asking Sundar Pichai to withdraw from the negotiations. They warned that AI technology could be used in very harmful ways. But Google's response was to say that the company is proud to support national security.
