A horrific incident occurred during a church service in Ireland on Tuesday: Diocese

Waterford- A 50-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after being seriously injured in a stabbing at a church in Tramore, Waterford. The incident took place during a pre-10am mass at Holy Cross Church in Summerhill.

The woman was in the main area of ​​the church at the time of the attack. It is understood she was stabbed with a knife. The victim was taken to Waterford University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. 

A man, believed to be in his 30s, was arrested at a nearby house and a knife was seized by gardaí. He has since been charged and is due to appear at Waterford District Court this morning. The church is closed this evening after a technical examination of the scene of the attack.

The incident at the Church of the Holy Cross, Tramore, was reported to have taken place between 50 and 60 people at Holy Cross Church. The parish priest, Fr Richard O’Halloran, confirmed that a parishioner had been stabbed in the incident. Father O’Halloran said that his colleague and several other people who were in the church at the time witnessed the incident before the 10am mass. He said that the woman was being recited by around 50 to 60 people and that she was attacked in the main part of the church. He praised the quick response of parishioners and emergency services who came to the woman’s aid. 

The Diocese of Waterford & Lismore said in a statement that it was deeply shocked by the violent incident that took place during Mass at Holy Cross Church in Tramore on Tuesday morning. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured parishioner, and we pray for their full and speedy recovery.” The diocese praised the “courage and composure of parishioners who assisted in this horrific incident.”
