Racing the Aftershocks: One father’s desperate dig for his family after the Venezuela quakes.

A catastrophic double earthquake sequence has devastated northern Venezuela, killing nearly 2,000 people and leaving an estimated 50,000 others missing beneath the debris. 

The disaster, which struck on June 24, 2026, involved a 7.2 magnitude foreshock followed just 39 seconds later by a massive 7.5 magnitude mainshock. It stands as the most powerful seismic event to strike the country in over 125 years, flattening high-rise buildings, disabling critical infrastructure, and tearing apart families across the heavily impacted seaside region of La Guaira and the capital city of Caracas.

On Wednesday evening, June 24, Nelson said a quick goodbye to his wife and two young sons at their luxury seaside apartment block in Venezuela’s coastal La Guaira region. He called out that he would be back shortly and jumped into his car to pick up some routine groceries. It was exactly 6:04 PM.

He had barely pulled away from the building when a violent tremor tore through the earth. Ahead of him, the building’s security guard screamed at him to abandon the vehicle. Nelson threw himself onto the ground just as a deafening, thunderous roar erupted behind him.

Using small hand tools and their bare fingernails, Nelson and his neighbors are manually picking through the jagged concrete slabs. On Monday, desperate residents managed to source heavy machinery on their own to clear the larger columns of rubble. Nelson’s mother watches her son dig hours on end without stopping. "He's like a robot," she said quietly.
