BEIRUT — A severe escalation in cross-border violence rocked southern Lebanon as a wave of heavy Israeli airstrikes flattened residential homes, killing at least 11 people—including three children and two women—in the deadliest flare-up since a shaky regional truce took effect.
The pre-dawn bombardment struck multiple locations across the Nabatieh district, hitting a residential building on the edge of the village of Ansar and tearing through the nearby town of Deir al-Zahrani. According to Lebanon’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center, the strikes left a total of 11 dead and at least 19 wounded, sparking widespread panic, emergency rescue operations through piles of concrete rubble, and an immediate wave of international alarm.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the raids were launched in direct retaliation for a recent Hezbollah attack targeting Israeli troops operating within southern Lebanon's security zones. While the Israeli military maintained that its objective was to dismantle militant infrastructure—pointing specifically to a localized commander—it acknowledged reports of civilian casualties, alleging that militant operations had dangerously overlapped with populated residential sectors.
The lethal strikes have delivered a severe blow to the fragile, U.S.-backed framework agreement brokered in June to stabilize the border region.
Lebanese leadership fiercely condemned the operation. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced the raids, emphasizing that civilian families and children "are not military targets". Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun warned that the violations send a deeply destructive signal to ongoing diplomatic pathways and international stabilization efforts.
As emergency responders continue to sift through the debris in southern villages, regional analysts warn that the mounting casualties and retaliatory rhetoric threaten to unravel the fragile ceasefire entirely, casting a dark shadow over upcoming diplomatic talks scheduled in Rome.
