ETTRICK, Va. — Five people were injured—including university students—following a violent late-night shooting outside residence halls at Virginia State University, plunging the campus into a temporary lockdown just days before the start of the fall academic term.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. near the Quad Annexes student housing area.
Responding officers from both campus police and the Chesterfield County Police Department arrived to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
All five victims were rushed to nearby area hospitals for urgent medical care. Authorities confirmed that one victim was initially listed in critical condition, while the remaining four sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
University officials later verified that at least one of those wounded was a student.
In response to the sudden violence, university leadership issued an immediate shelter-in-place order, directing the campus community to stay indoors while law enforcement secured the perimeter and searched for multiple suspects. The lockdown was lifted later in the morning after officials determined there was no longer an active, immediate threat to the wider public, though a heavy police presence remained visible across the grounds.
Investigators, aided by federal and regional law enforcement agencies—including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)—have launched a comprehensive multi-agency probe into the shooting.
The outbreak of violence has cast a heavy shadow over what should have been a celebratory week. The historic public university, home to roughly 5,700 students, had just welcomed returning and incoming undergraduates for the new school year, with classes originally slated to resume.
University administration released a formal statement expressing deep concern over the tragedy and emphasizing that student safety remains their paramount priority as cooperation with local law enforcement continues.
