UAE Halts All Trade and Financial Dealings With Iran Following Maritime Missile Attack

DUBAI — The United Arab Emirates announced a sweeping economic rupture with Tehran, declaring that all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran have been suspended until further notice.

The sudden move follows an urgent security alert in Abu Dhabi after Emirati defense systems detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran targeting Gulf shipping lanes.

The Catalyst: Ballistic Threat in Gulf Waters

The escalation began when emergency mobile alerts warned residents across the Emirates to seek shelter amid a potential missile threat.

The UAE Ministry of Defense later confirmed that its air defenses tracked two ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory. While the projectiles did not strike land—with the first falling outside territorial waters and the second landing within—officials confirmed they were explicitly targeting maritime navigation.

The attack marks a severe breakdown in a region that had experienced a fragile lull following earlier deconfliction talks.

Abu Dhabi Drops the Hammer

In a formal statement, Afra Al Hameli, Communications Director at the UAE Foreign Ministry, stressed that the unprecedented economic cutoff was enacted to safeguard national security and maintain the integrity of the international financial system.

* Total Suspension: All bilateral commercial channels, business exchanges, and bank transactions are frozen immediately.
 * Protecting Navigation: The government underscored its readiness to resolutely counter any attempts to jeopardize the safety of commercial shipping in critical Gulf waterways.
 * Prior Tensions: The suspension compounds earlier measures taken by Abu Dhabi since the outbreak of regional hostilities, including scaling back diplomatic representation and shuttering Iran-linked entities found violating domestic regulations.

Tehran Categorically Denies Involvement

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei swiftly dismissed the Emirati claims, "categorically rejecting" that Tehran had launched any missiles toward the UAE.

Baqaei termed the allegations baseless, warning that such accusations undermine ongoing diplomatic trust-building efforts and destabilize the neighborhood further.

Economic and Global Fallout

Economists note that severing ties with the UAE—historically one of Iran's top non-oil trading partners—will deal a heavy blow to Tehran's sanctions-hit economy. At the same time, the renewed hostility in the Persian Gulf has sent jitters through global energy markets, heightening anxiety over the security of vital maritime chokepoints and international trade.
