Pyongyang Fires Barrage of 10 Ballistic Missiles as North Korea Shrugs Off U.S.–South Korea Drill Reductions

SEOUL — North Korea launched a barrage of approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters, defying diplomatic overtures just hours after Washington and Seoul scaled back their ongoing joint military exercises.

The launch, detected by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff around 5:00 p.m., originated from the capital region of Pyongyang. The projectiles traveled roughly 300 kilometers (185 miles) before splashing down into the sea. Japan’s Prime Minister’s office and the Japan Coast Guard quickly confirmed the activity, noting that the missiles fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The provocative show of force comes on the heels of decisions by the United States and South Korea to curtail their annual 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises. U.S. President Donald Trump had ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce the scale and duration of the war games—cutting them short to conclude on Friday—citing his personal relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

However, Pyongyang swiftly rejected the gesture. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of the North Korean leader, dismissed Washington's move on Wednesday, stating that the "provocative, aggressive nature of the drills won't change even though their duration and size were reduced". She added that North Korea would not view the reduction as a measure of genuine good faith.

Emergency Security Meetings Convened

In response to the missile barrage, South Korea’s presidential office hastily convened an emergency National Security Council meeting. Officials strongly condemned the launches as a "grave act that violates UN Security Council resolutions" and ordered the nation's military to maintain absolute combat readiness.

While the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command stated that the latest tests did not pose an immediate threat to American personnel, territory, or regional allies, the sudden escalation has raised fresh concerns among international observers.
Analysts suggest Pyongyang's latest display is designed to prove that Kim Yo Jong's sharp warnings were more than mere rhetoric, while simultaneously asserting complete autonomy over its national security and nuclear posture.
